Black Rosewood is one of the eight categories of rosewood in the Chinese national standard. It belongs to the Fabaceae (Papilionoideae) family and is classified as rosewood. It is a precious material for furniture and crafts. The trees mostly grow in Madagascar; it is a tree species reaching about 15 meters in height, with a DBH up to 0.4m. Black Rosewood timber has a rich luster. Old wood has no special odor, while new wood has a faint sour fragrance. The color contrast between heartwood and sapwood is prominent: sapwood is white or slightly yellowish-brown, while the freshly cut heartwood surface is purplish-red, turning into a deep, heavy purple or blackish-purple over time, with interwoven black and purple grain. Once polished, it becomes smooth and lubricious, imparting a sense of mellow and restrained beauty.
